PLAKA. This quaint section of the city is located on the slope of the Acropolis, above the Plaka. Narrow streets wind between white Cycladic cube houses, brightened by pots of well-tended flowers and drying laundry. The region was settled in the 19th century by craftsmen from the island of Anafi ­ hence, the name. The district is marked on the southeast side by St. George of the Rock church, on the western side by the Ayios Simeon neoclassical church, and on the Acropolis side by a 14th-century stone chapel.

Description:
DAPHNI. Six miles west of Athens, along the road to Delphi, sits this beautifully maintained Byzantine structure. The monastery was built in 1070 in classic "Greek cross octagon" style, and its mosaics are considered one of the great treasures of the Middle Ages. They feature scenes from the life of Christ, the Virgin Mary, angels, and prophets. The centerpiece, the "Christ in Majesty" mosaic, is illuminated by sixteen windows and is located in the dome. It shows Jesus with his finger on the Book of Judgment.

KESSARIANI. This monastery is still maintained by a small group of monks, who make ends meet by allowing visitors to explore their historic residence. Although buildings in the compound date from the 11th century, the chapel's mosaics were not added until the 16th or 17th century. Unlike many monasteries, this one has remained Greek Orthodox since it was established. Its manicured grounds and gardens are popular for picnicking in the fine weather.
