PANGRATI. Multi-ethnic music is the highlight at this small bar. Afro-Cuban, Indian, Peruvian, and Armenian grooves are played most nights of the week. The action typically starts late though ­ bands usually don't begin playing until after 11pm. Try the house drink while you're there. Known as a rakomelo, it's strong, licorice-flavored raki liquor dosed with honey so that it goes down smoothly.

KOLONAKI. Outdoor movie theaters are a favorite pastime with Athenian folks, and this venue is one of the best. First-run American and European flicks are screened often during summer evenings, so you'll always find something interesting to catch. Snacks and refreshments ­ including booze ­ are served as well. FILOPAPPOU HILL. If you get the opportunity, don't miss a performance by Greece's preeminent folk dance troupe, which has been delighting audiences since 1953. No fewer than 75 costumed dancers, musicians, and singers showcase the country's many regional traditions. The program changes every two weeks, so many audience members are repeat spectators. Tickets can be purchased at the box office in the Plaka during the day or at the door prior to performances.

AMBELOKIPI. Fun is the operative word at this club. An all-ages crowd comes to boogie to a range of musical styles, including reggae, Latin, funk, and hip-hop. Some of the most popular nights feature live Brazilian musicians. The unpretentious spot is also renowned as a place for patrons who truly love to dance and do it well. Smart-casual to stylish attire.

METS. Plan in advance, and make a reservation early if you want a table at this well-regarded jazz club, located next to the Athens City Cemetery. For more than 30 years, internationally renowned performers have come here to play classical and modern jazz, much to the delight of loyal regulars.
